  • Stereo Microscopes.....

When I worked in a hi-fi store back in the 1970s we had a really nice Shure stereo microscope to check stylus wear.

Without access to a nice stereo microscope, I've resorted to a variety of solutions including a field microscope and a nice USB microscope. Neither of these is as user friendly nor do they render a 3D view.

Been looking for a used Shure or a viable stereo microscope option on the auction site. There are a bunch.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent stereo microscope that will work well to assess stylus wear?

    Thank you.

TubeHiFiNut , David what's your budget? Do you want to just be able to view with your eyes or have display capability as well. Some scopes designed for gems and minerals might work well if the lighting is good. I went through a lot of research and a good one seems to be from $300 up.

      Thank you, MikeT.

From what I've researched to date: A stereo microscope allows a much easier and complete view of the stylus.

The type of mount (regular or boom), a really good ring light, availability of stronger objective lenses, eyepieces, barlow lenses and diopter adjustments....as many of these as I can get without going to far north of $350 - $400.

      Don't want much, do I.

A little north of your target though.

        Sir,

A Jeweler's Loupe, made by a decent company, like Bausch and Lomb, at TEN times magnification, has worked well for my local co-worker audiophile friends in the past. They are under 100 dollars, and he truly enjoyed using it. He thought it seemed " just right " for him to use.

I am not sure if this is the type he was thinking of:, am asking him.....

        YMMV.

          Thank you, Jeff.

I'm looking into a stand mount stereo microscope for a couple of reasons: 1) My hands are not as steady as they used to be and 2) From what I've read, the stereo scope gives better depth of field.
