@Redboy
Having heard how fantastic John VFs Redboy built transformer preamp sounds, I just gotta get one for myself. As I understand the maker of those volume controls no longer sells to the DIY crowd, what is the closest I could get to one of these?

Thanks in advance!

Fortunately for you (and all of us!), the secret sauce is still readily available.

The magic is in the autoformers, which are wound by Dave Slagle and available for purchase in a variety of configurations at Intact Audio.

All of these attenuators have the same sound; the options buy different switches and
level stepping.

Buy a set and box ‘em up!

So how close could I get? To what John has?
You can have all very same sound, but you can’t have the remote control.

The Elma 47 step attenuators are the ticket, methinks. If balance control is important, you’ll want the mono pair.

No remote???? Booooooooooooooo

So I'd need a pair of monos, or a single stereo. Then some sort of source selector. A box and a bunch of RCAs?

add a good quality buffer (cathode follower?!), use long, umm, interconnects, and put the volume control next to your comfy chair

;)

You can get source selector switches with a remote control. I have one I found at the dump, branded Philips. :)

Hey there! I hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

And everybody should get a TVC, there's nothing within sane or even moderately insane prices that comes close, at least, that's how I hear it. I hate -most- preamps, but this one... <3. All hearts and listening. I need a t-shirt that says "All passive preamps aren't remotely the same just because they don't plug in!"

It might be an interesting conversation starter... Or, possibly, an effective social repellent. :)

FWIW, the source selector that Luther built for me is an Elma, from Parts Connexion.
