I just watched a youtube video of some dude moving a tonearm around with his hand, and declaring that because he couldn't feel any hangup in the bearings or hear anything in the movement, that that particular AT entry level turntable is all that anybody needs for vinyl playback. His hand, is the best measuring instrument for bearing tolerance. Don't look for a better turntable, they all work the same. And because I've listened to a grand total of 5 turntables, let me make a 40 minute video about how I know everything now.

Then of course I have watched the polar opposite, an "audiophile" proclaiming how amazing some obvious well, snake oil, was. Same assumption and arrogance, different motive. You have to spend $10,000 or you're not listening to music. "I spent this much money and if you didn't, you're obviously not capable of understanding what I'm hearing".

It's either dumpster divers thinking their dumpster finds compete with anything and everything or the Richie Riches thinking you can't possibly enjoy something that costs less than a car.

Where are the people in between? Does anybody in this hobby not have a grudge against somebody that they want to take out via gear choice? Does anybody not fight whatever personal hangups they have with another "tribe" of people through the simple act of trying to listen to music?

I feel about my hobby as I feel about politics. The fringes on either side are yelling bloody murder while the masses in the middle are left to feel like they're all alone, just wanting something sane, calm, and sensible. There must be more sane people in between. There MUST be more than the people we have here. Every forum I've been involved in besides this one is infested with the fringes, one or the other. There's no middle voice that stands out. Its there, but is drowned out by the tribes. Direct Drive fighting with Belt Drive. Tube fighting with solid state. Old fighting with new. Not about preferences but about how things HAVE TO BE or they're awful.

I'll admit it...humanity annoys the sh*t out of me lately. I wish about 90% of the people I encounter online (outside of here of course) would calmly just go STFU... :)

Armistice Day is coming least we fight with things other than guns now (for the most part). I guess that's progress. I just don't get why tribalism is so appealing.

Why must everything be enjoyed at somebody else's expense? Why can't something just be good for what it is, instead of "good and everything else sucks? And so do you"

The shortened form of that is "man, some days I just really really hate the internet".

    Where are the "in betweens"?

Right here at The Haven. :)

Well yes, of course. The call isn't coming from inside the house :). And that's also why this is the only forum I bother with anymore.

Speaking of..the absolute WORST are the audio forums on Facebook. You mix the least amount of experience with the most amount of people and the most amount of nobody-actually-personally-knowing-anybody and its just a recipe for absolute awfulness. And useless as far as actually learning anything.

    Understand completely. :)

The Haven truly has become an oasis in the desert for those of us who want to hang out and have some fun with our wonderful hobby. :)

(And crocheting, furniture, photography, booze, cigars, architecture and life in general.) ;):)

Oh, I forgot, I picked up a new booze-glass at the flea market, I'll add it to the what's in your glass thread next time I pour a drink. Nice round-ish waterford crystal whiskey glass.

My favorite part of this forum is the extreme turns threads take....

The "in-betweens" are too busy listening to music, to waste time on such a fruitless endeavour as joining in the fray.

Gotta go flip the record now.

Always cool to find a nice whisky glass. :)

I also enjoy how we all kind of meander through topics. :)

I was having very similar thoughts today about humanity in general today -- although I was vacuuming at the time, which may have been feeding a bit of my misanthropy ;)

Avoiding all 24x7 news channels, facebook, twitter and most other Internet forums (of any ilk) helps. ;) :)

All the portals into echo chambers....and anything with an algorithm that reinforces what you already think, to feed you more, for clicks.

Happily...I am one of those people. I have friends who think I am nuts to have spent what I did on my vinyl set up...
and have friends who think I didn't spend enough. Can't please all the people all of the time...
I'm happy with my set up and that is ALL that matters!

What is represented on the internet does not match reality in its complexity and richness, at least regarding human sciences. The drive being visibility, I would assume that extreme and provoking situations are chosen and emphasized by individuals who want to recall attention on themselves. This is at least my view.

As in (and I mean this with an atypical level of seriousness) Kris Wu's purportedly gaming the system to claim the number one song slot ahead of Ariana Grande last week(?).

I heard about this on Sam Sanders' It's Been a Minute on NPR, but there's not straightforward link to the topic itself.

Very timely thread @JohnVF ! I just deleted two apps yesterday. F@x and A**le News. I’m settling in with a local newspaper’s digital edition where there is an actual effort in editing what is presented and much less focus on what gets the most hits. Still a bit slanted but the news where we lived for the past seven years was as well, just in the opposite direction.

I was getting too depressed and angry every day to keep reading the drek the “right and left” ( feel free to reverse) serve up as news and truth.

I will happily read about vintage audio and furniture in the same thread, listen to music or read a good book. Sometimes I do all three at once! :D I expect if something REALLY important happens I’ll learn about it from a breaking news or “this is NOT a test” ribbon at the top of my TV screen while watching reruns of vintage Law and Order.

If you were to go by the internet you'd believe a civil war in the US was going to happen next week. If you just walk around outside, everybody is still pretty okay to everybody else. Now, I don't know that you can stand on a box and shout your political beliefs everywhere without incident, but it's not polite to do so anyway. Last night on the news they showed 20 people protesting something, while basically ignoring the fire that destroyed an entire town in California. It seems that making everybody into an a-hole on one side or the other turned out to be more profitable than actually just telling the news (which didn't used to be a profit maker, it was a 'loss leader' done so by civil duty and for the common good).
