My Media Room...

So I've been in this house for over 15 years now.
When we first moved in I just set up my stereo equipment in the finished part of the basement, but I never really liked the "decor".
White top half of the walls with chair-rail and ugly green striped wallpaper on the bottom...

As time went on, I added my first PJ, an InFocus X1, later replaced with a Mitsubishi HC1500. Also an Oppo BDP-83 for spinning video discs.

But my focus has always been, and still leans heavily towards, 2-channel.

A few months ago, my wife suggested we redo the room, and I jumped at the chance. It's all DIY, so took a few months of evenings and weekends.

Here are some pix of the progress...

I'd already skimmed and painted this wall, but decided some fresh sheet-rock was needed, as there is no shelving covering the back wall...

The ceiling in this area also needed to be replaced...

And pretty much done...

Audio Sources are a Linn LP12 that feeds an Audio Alchemy VITB and a Sony CDP-XA20ES.
Those feed an Audio Alchemy DLC with the PS Three power supply upgrade.
The DLC feeds an Audio Alchemy Overture OM-150 with the PS 150-M Upgrade.
And that feeds Anthony Gallo Reference 3.5 speakers.

Video sources are Oppo BDP-83 and a Roku Streaming Stick +.
Those feed an Emotiva UMC-200.
The front out of the UMC-200 feed the DLC, the side and rear surround outs each feed an Audio Alchemy Overture OM-150.

For surrounds I have 4 Sapphire SAT1000 speakers mounted at ear level.

The Sub-woofer out of the UMC-200 feeds a Dayton Audio SA-1000, which I have feeding the second VC in the Gallo Reference woofers.

Video is projected onto a 110" gray canvas screen by a BenQ HT2050A.

Power for everything but the PJ goes through a Belkin PureAV PF60, all is connected to a dedicated 20amp circuit.

I'm thinking about building some passive subs and not powering the second VC on the Gallo Ref 3.5s during movies.

I'd like to add Atmos capabilities as well. Most likely, for Atmos decoding, I'd end up with a receiver, as I feel stand-alone Atmos processors are more expensive than I'm comfortable spending on something like that. So I wouldn't need the additional Audio Alchemy amps I'm currently using for the surrounds, just have to make sure that the receiver has line-level main L+R outputs to feed the DLC. This keeps the pure 2-channel system as is, and takes main L+R amplifier duties away from the receiver, leaving more power available for all the ambiance channels.

In 2020 I added an 18" Sub. I've had it hooked up to both the 2 channel and HT systems, but now it's strictly in use with the HT.

Not it's normal location, just for the pic ;)

In 2021 I got a Marantz SR6015 to handle surround decoding and to power my 4 surround, and 4 overhead speakers.

Love the 'view' behind your rack, I should do something like that.

Have you ever acoustically measured your room?

Just wondering as I am stuck with a long, narrow, short room in the basement too.

Thanks, it's a tapestry I got from Amazon, I didn't like looking at the plain wall with little windows. And no, never measured the room's acoustics. I can tell you is sucks up bass. I mean I can feel that 18" working, but it isn't overwhelming down there, however the cabinets and dishes in the kitchen above will be shaking, and you can feel the floor upstairs shake as well.

The bass situation you have sounds like my room. I can be listening at what I think are normal levels, hardly noticing much bass, and yet upstairs things are shaking and booming and irritating my lovely bride.

I entered your room size into the REW room simulator and guessed at your speaker, couch, and subwoofer locations and it modeled your room.

You can see your bass suck out in the first graph.

In the second it shows what moving the sub to behind the couch would do.

Pretty interesting software. You can remove the sub from the calculations and virtually move your chair and speakers around and see what is going to happen. Or you can add the sub back in and move that to see what might happen with different positioning.

@Olson_jr one thing I noticed is that you have the sub shown as ported, but it's sealed...

I'm going to see if I can dl a copy today.

Yep, one can simulate sealed or ported, it did not make as big a change as positions. You can also play around with the sub's output and timing (maybe that is called phase) and the graphs will readjust with the changes.

Much of the REW software is over my head, but I have done a couple of measurements and the Room Simulator pretty much matches my room measurements, and one of my walls is actually at 4 different distances from its corresponding wall.
