The Mavericks have been around since the 1990s but went on hiatus for several years then regrouped in the early 2010s. While I no longer listen to much Xmas music, this album, Hey! Merry Christmas! (2018), impressed me right off the bat, especially the first track, "Christmas Time is (Comin' Round Again)." The whole album has a retro vibe and is reminiscent of the 1960s and the Phil Spector sound (and even covers one of the Spector classics "Christmas {Baby, Please Come Home}"). Engineered by the great Niko Bolas.

Here's the track...

Mavericks' vocalist RAUL MALO has the most amazing voice!

I'll give this outing a listen over the Yuletide days ahead! 😊

There are so few that can sing the way he does.

I also like the Mavs album En Español (it was an "album of the year" in 2020 for me). A lot of covers, but also some nice originals. Raul singing "La Sitiera" may just be his definitive performance. And he seems very much at home with the Latin American songs on the album (his parents emigrated from Cuba in the 1960s).

It's hard to fault their 2003 release too... Simply entitled The Mavericks.

I saw Raul Malo last night in Houston doing a solo acoustic show.
He brought out his son to accompany him on a snare drum for several songs
He is a truly amazing vocalist.

This is a great album that performs really well on vinyl LP.

Not your immaculate old-world type of mint Euro pressing, but good enough to satisfy and sounding better than the (alleged) hi-res stream.

Brönner has an unmistakable "Miles" sound to his muted horn, and Bob James (of "Taxi Theme" fame) still does what he does best. So, both artists seem to be in their element.

It just seems to keep finding its way back for another spin... 😊

Since the group that is Toto will not be recording anymore (partly has to do with the lawsuit with Jeff Porcaro's widow), I've kept up with the group members' individual recordings--Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro (the lone remaining Porcaro brother), David Paich, and Joseph Williams. They all perform on each other's recordings and still compose songs together.

"Run To Me" was co-written by Paich, Williams and Lukather, and Williams and Luke both appear in the song. And I guess since they couldn't resurrect Jeff Porcaro for the drum parts, they had to resort to Ringo Starr. 😁 (Luke also plays in the All-Starr Band.) Yeah, it's a bit of a lightweight pop/rock song but sometimes we need that in our lives.
