Sold Pickering XV-15 625e w/ aftermarket stylus

Really nice Pickering with a Japanese aftermarket stylus used at the recommendation of Joseph Long, who thought these styli were completely underrated. I agree: this is one fine sounding cartridge. With compliance of 17 and a mass of just 6.3 grams, it is well-suited to the light to medium-light tonearms that ruled back when this cartridge was made. The frequency range is 10Hz to 25kHz, with an impressive 35 dB channel separation: prodigious bass, liquidy mids and very crisp highs, with excellent imaging. Tracks nicely at 1 gram. No brush. Never liked the Pickering brush (liked the Stanton, though).

There are plenty of comments on multiple fora about this cartridge. Some negative comments by "Chakster" who is quite confused as to which Pickering cartridge this is (it was never "entry level"). This is the same motor as the Stanton 681, a Moving Iron, and the styli for the Stanton and Pickering are interchangeable. Also not the "DJ" model, which was produced when Pickering was in its death rattle phase. Generally people have come to appreciate the honestly and depth of the Pickering XV-15/ Stanton 681 cartridges over time.

Because the stylus is not original, I'll part with it for $70. I'm in NYC, and local pick-up is certainly OK, and you'll get a $10 discountIMG_1516.jpegIMG_1515.jpeg Otherwise I'll include shipping to the lower 48 for my price.

I"m digging this so much. So many good carts finding new homes! I'll have to bug you for the stylus brand as I have a 681 laying around here somewhere. I think. I know I used to have one. I might have bought a Jico stylus for it but... yeah, I have no idea. It's lost in the haze of middle age. They're nice carts.

Hi John,

I will reach out to Joseph Long to see which one it is. Thankfully, he's really picky about these things, so I know it is a strong performer.

And thank you for your sentiments about the new homes. I'm happy it's working out, though it's bitter-sweet: I collected these over the last 10 years because I have truly enjoyed the tweaking and adjusting to find the right arm/cart/headshell combo. But those days are past, and it's time to let go, and just enjoy the music.
